The San Francisco Chronicle reports the opening of Aqua Metals Bay Area battery recycling plant three miles from Tesla Motors’ battery manufacturing plant, the Gigafactory.

The AquaRefinery uses a new electrochemical process to recycle the lead from lead-acid batteries, according to the Chronicle. This process produces less pollution than traditional battery recycling, at a fraction of the cost, the article says.

“Nobody does something green unless there’s a greenback associated with it,” Chief Commercial Officer Steven Cotton told the newspaper.

The process won Aqua a Rising Star award this year from Platts, a global energy and commodities information company, and a $10 million investment from Dallas-based Interstate Batteries, the article says.

“Interstate Batteries seeks out innovation, pursues opportunities and invests in the technology we need to succeed not just today, but also tomorrow,” says Interstate CEO Scott Miller in a press release.
