Report indicates Ohio EAF mill could restart

An electric arc furnace (EAF) steel mill in Mingo Junction, Ohio, that has been idled since 2009 is the center of rumors and a report that it may reopen later in 2016.

An online article prepared by the Wheeling (West Virginia) Intelligencer reports that some workers have already been hired to report to the mill in the southern Ohio town in September.

City and county officials who may know something about the development are keeping quiet, according to the Intelligencer article, although rumors are pointing to an India-based company as the buyer of the mill.

The EAF mill was built by the former Wheeling-Pittsburgh steel company and was later operated by Russia-based OAO Severstal.

It has subsequently had other ownership groups and has been partially disassembled since being shut down in 2009.

“The company interested in buying the plant reportedly wants to restart the 80-inch rolling mill in the late fall [of 2016] and restart the electric arc furnace [in 2017],” reports the Intelligencer.
