CRRA announces recycling award winners

The California Resource Recovery Association (CRRA) announced the winning organizations and individuals displaying excellence in the recycling and resource recovery industry at its 40th Annual Conference, held in August in Sacramento.

The categories and winners are the following:

  • Dave Hardy Leadership in Organics Award — Marin Carbon Project. The award recognizes an organization demonstrating excellence in production, marketing and/or use of organic materials.
  • Next Generation Recycler Award — 4R’s Student Action Project. The award is designed to promote the next generation of recyclers.
  • Outstanding “Closing the Loop” Commitment Award — Goodwill Industries of San Diego. The award recognizes an organization that has implemented a program featuring the procurement of products that reduce waste, have recycled content and/or are safer alternatives to toxic products.
  • Outstanding C&D Recycling Award — Mary Williams, San Francisco Department of the Environment. The award is given to a person or group that has excelled in the reduction and recycling of materials generated through C&D and/or demolition activities.
  • Outstanding Household Hazardous Waste/Universal/Electronic Recycling Award — The City of Lancaster Recycling. The award recognizes innovation and excellence in diverting household hazardous waste, universal waste and electronic materials from disposal.
  • Outstanding Practices in Venue/Event Resource Recovery Award – Moscone Center, San Francisco. The award recognizes large events or venues for implementing waste reduction, recycling and organics programs, innovative source reduction programs, recovering more than 90 percent of event discards and other programs that demonstrate best practices in event or venue resource management.
  • Outstanding Recycling Program Award – County of Santa Cruz. This award is given to a group that has excelled in implementing and carrying out a recycling and/or diversion program.
  • Outstanding School Recycling Program Award — Desert Knolls Elementary School of Apple Valley. This award recognizes a school that has excelled in implementing a recycling and/or diversion program.
  • Outstanding Waste Prevention Award — Clean Water Fund/Clean Water Action. This award is provided to a group that has taken the steps to evaluate their waste stream and has implemented a program that reduces the generation of waste.
  • Pavitra Crimmel Reuse Award — Peter Mui of Berkeley. The award recognizes special achievement by in the reuse of materials.
  • Zero Waste Achievement Award — Monterey Regional Waste Management District. This award is provided to a group or organization that has made the commitment to zero waste, implemented outreach programs and excelled toward the achievement of their zero waste goal.

The following awards were honors designated by the CRRA Board.

  • Rick Best Environmental Advocacy Award — Director Scott Smithline of CalRecycle. The award recognizes those whose accomplishments go beyond reuse, recycling and composting.
  • CRRA Service Awards — Leslie Lukacs and Tracie Bills of SCS Engineers Inc. This award recognizes individual service to the organization, including time and resources.
