The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) has awarded grants totaling more than $2.2 million to seven companies as part of its 2016 Industrial Rail Access Program (IRAP).

IRAP is a competitive state-funded public/private partnership program that provides financial assistance to applicants prepared to invest in industry-based rail infrastructure access improvement projects.

“Improving access to the Commonwealth’s freight rail network is an important step in stimulating economic growth,” says Transportation Secretary and CEO Stephanie Pollack. “We look forward to collaborating with the recipients to advance their important projects and ensure that Massachusetts businesses have the tools and resources to grow and thrive.”

Parallel Products of New England, headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, received a grant of $500,000, which will be used to build a recycling center rail loading facility in New Bedford, Massachusetts. The project will support the expansion and relocation of Parallel’s current operation to a new facility in New Bedford, which will facilitate the hiring of 50 more employees.

Parallel Products’ New Bedford recycling facility uses advanced optical sorting technology to process more than 30 million pounds of plastic scrap, primarily containers, per year.

Excel Recycling, headquartered in Westport, Massachusetts, has been awarded a grant of $479,700 by IRAP. The money will be used to support the company’s expansion of its current operation in Freetown by increasing the types of products the rail can handle.

According to MassDOT, Excel’s rail expansion project will allow the company to efficiently ship ferrous scrap directly to steel mills by rail. The extension of the existing rail spur will result in increased rail volumes and allow excel Recycling to expand the company’s operations.

Other companies receiving grant money from the MassDOT through IRAP include Providence and Worcester Railroad, Pam Am Southern LLC, Pioneer Valley Railroad, Essroc Cement Corp. and Massachusetts Central Railroad.
