Minnesota’s Becker County to open new transfer station
<![CDATA[Becker County, Minnesota, is expected to open its new 16,000-square-foot-transfer station in October 2016. According to a report on www.dl-online.com, the $2.9 million transfer station is a major improvement for the community.

The facility is designed for smoother and safer traffic by separating commercial haulers from residents dropping off junk in trailers and dump trucks, the article says.

A new access road has been built and the site is designed so each type of traffic will have its own one-way loop to follow in and out of the site.

The transfer station will have enough room to store three days’ worth of solid waste inside, which is about 150 tons. The county handles about 18,000 tons of garbage a year.

Most of the trash goes mostly to a waste-to-energy facility in Perham, Minnesota, but some also goes to landfill. The new transfer station also includes an interior concrete ramp, so drivers can use it to let the fluid drain out the back of their trucks. The liquid will flow into floor drains that lead to a catch basin.

A new truck scale has been installed, complete with security cameras, and it will take the place of the old half-scale at the smaller transfer station. The old transfer station building will remain and be used as a pay center and as a backup transfer station if needed.

The transfer station was paid for the help of a $2 million state grant. The grant reportedly includes another $625,000 that the county will match and use to build a recycling facility.

Site prep has already started for that facility and requests for proposals are expected in the coming weeks for the recycling equipment and building, according to the article.
