The Aluminum Association releases green building guidelines
<![CDATA[The Aluminum Association, Arlington, Virginia, has released “Aluminum in Green Buildings—A Guide to Environmental Declarations” as part of its series of guidelines for the building and construction market sector.

The green building guide is intended to assist and support aluminum stakeholders—aluminum producers, end-users, architects, designers, engineers and others—in understanding how to appropriately conduct environmental assessments for aluminum building products and make environmental declarations, says The Aluminum Association. The group adds that environmental product declaration (EPD) is becoming a significant component of the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC’s) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) V4 green building certification program, and is replacing the traditional recycled content method for material credit in the previous versions of LEED.

“Our industry is dedicated to advancing sustainability efforts in building and construction through the use of lightweight, recyclable aluminum,” says Heidi Brock, president and CEO of The Aluminum Association. “This new guide will help building and construction end-users and other stakeholders make educated assessments when developing environmental declarations.”

Due to the highly technical nature of EPD, The Aluminum Association says it is devoted to guiding aluminum users in the characteristics of the metal, reasonable environmental assessment methods, and appropriate sources of data and information on aluminum product EPDs.

The association launched Aluminum in Green Buildings—A Guide to Environmental Declarations at Greenbuild 2016, Oct. 5-7 in Los Angeles. Greenbuild is the world’s largest conference and expo dedicated to green building. The guide is available on the association’s website at www.aluminum.org.

At Greenbuild in 2016, which also was hosted in Washington, the association released the first of the guideline series titled “Aluminum in Green Buildings—A Guide to Green Building Development and Certification with Aluminum Products.” That edition was focused on guiding stakeholders to better use the unique material properties and life cycle characteristics of aluminum to maximize green building credits.

The Aluminum Association says it represents U.S. and foreign-based companies and their suppliers throughout the value chain, from primary production to value added products to recycling. The association is one of the industry’s leading voices, providing global standards, business intelligence, sustainability research and industry expertise to member companies, policymakers and the general public. The aluminum industry helps manufacturers produce sustainable and innovative products, including more fuel efficient vehicles, recyclable packaging, greener buildings and modern electronics.
