RecycleMania, the collegiate recycling competition managed by Keep America Beautiful (KAB), Stamford, Connecticut, is back for the 17th year as college and university campuses across the country compete to see which on will reduce, reuse, recycle and compost the most on campus. The 2017 RecycleMania competition launched Sunday, Feb. 5, and will run for eight weeks, concluding Saturday, April 1.

Public and private colleges and universities of all sizes, including Rutgers University, Texas Tech University, San Diego State University and Indiana University, are registered to compete in several categories based on the weight of recycling and food organics collected and waste reduction. At the end of each week, new rankings are posted based on the data reported by schools. Students, faculty, staff and other “RecycleManiacs” can monitor the competition via the online scoreboard at www.recyclemaniacs.org.

“We’re eager to kick off the 17th year of the RecycleMania competition,” says RecycleMania Inc. President Stacy Wheeler. “With consistent additions like the Race to Zero Waste category, RecycleMania continues to be a valuable resource for colleges and universities to influence recycling and zero-waste behavior with students and staff on campuses across the country.”

The event has been scaled back to six main competition categories, including Diversion, Per Capita Classic, GameDay: Basketball, E-cycleMania and Waste Minimization Case Studies and Race to Zero Waste. KAB says this move will simplify the national rankings of the competition around the primary categories that apply to a majority of participating schools.

The new Race to Zero Waste category is designed to help schools focus and test their zero-waste efforts on one building and compare their results to other college campuses, KAB says.

“Keep America Beautiful is dedicated to educating individuals about what and how to recycle—at home and on-the-go—and we believe it’s critical to engage those on college and university campuses across the country,” says Brenda Pulley, senior vice president, recycling, KAB. “The RecycleMania competition is a fun and engaging way to encourage students to spread the recycling message to their peers and, in turn, create a well-informed generation of community stewards.”

Last year’s RecycleMania national winners included Richland College of Dallas in the Diversion (Grand Champion) category and Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, in the Per Capita Classic category.

RecycleMania is made possible with the sponsorship support of The Coca-Cola Co. and Rubbermaid Commercial Products, with comprehensive program management by KAB.

“Coca-Cola is a longtime supporter of RecycleMania because it encourages college students to recycle more through a friendly and fun competition,” says Bruce Karas, vice president of environment and sustainability at Coca-Cola North America. “Programs like RecycleMania encourage students to develop recycling habits that continue throughout their lives and impact future generations.”

Anna Whitton, vice president of marketing, Rubbermaid Commercial Products, says, “We are encouraged by the energy and enthusiasm shown by colleges, universities and the surrounding communities for Recyclemania. Through this sponsorship and by developing products that make recycling easier in commercial environments, Rubbermaid Commercial Products is steadfast in our commitment to sustainability, and we look forward to another exciting Recyclemania competition this year.”

Since the competition launched in 2001, millions of students from over 1,000 colleges and universities have recycled and composted roughly 730 million pounds of material during the tournament time frame. Together, tournament participants have prevented the release of nearly 1 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, which is comparable to removing 7 million passenger vehicles from the road for one year, KAB says.
