London-based analysis and consultancy firm CRU Group is preparing for the World Aluminium Conference 2017, scheduled to take place 3-5 May 2017 at the Marriot London Grosvenor Square hotel.

Th 2017 conference, the 22nd version of the event, will address sustainability in the aluminium sector, focusing on how environmental and economic strategies interact and the business opportunities created by sustainability, says CRU. As it has in years past, the conference is being planned to attract more than 200 delegates from around the world and to present updates on the outlook for markets, prices and premiums in the aluminium sector.

In addition to two and a half days of conference programming, the 2017 conference includes two workshops, one on managing aluminium price risk and the other on aluminium casting technology.

Scheduled speakers at World Aluminium 2017 include:

  • Michael A. Bless, President, CEO and director with Chicago-based Century Aluminum;

  • Erika Ahlqvist, an executive vice president with Norway-based SAPA AS;

  • Goksal Gungor, general manager of Turkey-based Assan Aluminyum;

  • Christopher Robert Smith, president of Saudi Arabia-based Ma’aden Aluminium;

  • Max Layton, a commodities researcher with New York-based Goldman Sachs; and

  • Tolga Egrilmezer, a vice president with London-based Rio Tinto.

Topics and questions addressed by speakers are expected to include:

  • Can large markets in low-carbon and high recycled material-content be created beyond castings and cans?

  • Would a premium for green aluminium be achievable, or does the benefit lie in market creation?

  • Is China on a path to rolled products global dominance?

  • Will the WTO case re-shape global aluminium trade, pertinent to China?

  • How will the “Internet of things” drive efficiency and create new opportunities for aluminium?

  • Can the United States cope with being the largest importer of aluminium in the world, and if so, where next for the Midwest premium?
