In a press conference held the week of April 10, 2017, with New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY), it was announced that the curbside e-scrap collections that are part of the city’s ecycleNYC program in Staten Island will be expanding to other boroughs beginning this fall.
The curbside collections, launched as a pilot effort by the New York Department of Sanitation (DSNY) and electronics recycler ERI last October, have been so successful they will be made permanent in Staten Island and will roll out to other parts of the city over the next three years, starting with North Brooklyn this fall.
This news follows on the heels of the previous announcement by Fresno, California-headquartered ERI and DSNY that the ecycleNYC program now serves more than 2.3 million New Yorkers and has collected and recycled more than 10 million pounds of e-scrap.
At this week’s press event announcing the curbside expansion, Mayor de Blasio said, “Since the e-waste pilot on Staten Island was such a success, we’re expanding it to a lot more New Yorkers. It’s so important to our zero waste goals to recycle everything we can, including electronics—but we also need to make it easier for our residents to do so, and that’s what this program is all about.”
Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia added, “We are proud to have worked with Council Member Matteo to bring the pilot curbside electronic waste collection program to Staten Island, and we are thrilled with the support we received from Staten Island residents. Based on this support, we have worked to make this a permanent program and to expand the coverage areas to make it available to more and more residents in the months and years to come.”
