ERI launches electronics recycling mail-back program in Los Angeles

LA Sanitation and ERI, a Fresno, California-based recycler of electronic scrap and an information technology asset disposition (ITAD) and cybersecurity-focused hardware destruction company, have announced the launch of the city of Los Angeles’ first Electronics Recycling Mail Back Program.

The electronics recycling program aims to make recycling electronics more convenient for Los Angeles residents by offering another option to recycle in addition to the already established free drop-off locations, the companies say.

The new online program enables Los Angeles County customers to mail back unwanted consumer electronic items directly to ERI for a fee. This program is geared toward residents, businesses and other organizations seeking convenience, says ERI.

Specially designed boxes, available in multiple sizes, are available online at the lasan.eridirect.com website. The price of the box is all-inclusive, allowing customers to include as many devices as can fit in each box, provided the maximum weight is not exceeded.

The flat rate of the official electronics recycling boxes is $30, $65 or $90, depending on size. The price of each box includes:

  • delivery of a new, empty box;
  • return shipping to ERI’s processing facility;
  • environmental certifications;
  • NAID– (National Association of Information Destruction)-certified secure data destruction; and
  • an official certificate of recycling.

“It’s a tremendous honor and privilege for ERI to be partnering once again with our friends in the great city of Los Angeles and providing responsible, effective recycling of its electronic waste,” says John Shegerian, chairman and CEO of ERI. “As someone who spends a great majority of my time here in LA, it’s a humbling and rewarding experience to be able to help the city do the right thing and develop a program to help people here effectively and responsibly recycle their e-waste—the fastest growing waste stream in the world today—and keep toxic electronics out of landfills!”

“By offering more options for our customers to recycle their electronic waste, we are living up to our mission of protecting public health and the environment,” says LA Sanitation Executive Director and General Manager Enrique C. Zaldivar. “Now customers can choose between visiting one of several S.A.F.E. Center locations or having a box delivered right to their doors.”

ERI is certified to demanufacture and recycle every type of electronic scrap in an environmentally friendly manner. ERI says it processes more than 275 million pounds of electronic waste annually at eight locations, serving every zip code in the United States.

As a lead agency for the city’s environmental programs and initiatives, LA Sanitation says it works to protect public health and the environment through the administration and management of three program areas: Clean Water (wastewater), Solid Resources (solid waste management) and Watershed Protection (stormwater). These infrastructure programs collect, treat, recycle and dispose the solid and liquid waste generated by the nation’s second largest city of more than 4 million residents.
