American Disposal Services celebrates its drivers and helpers

American Disposal Services, Manassas, Virginia, celebrated National Garbage Man Day the week of June 17, 2017, with daily surprises for its waste and recycling drivers and helpers.

“The men and women of the waste hauling industry don’t receive the recognition they deserve,” says Kevin Edwards, general manager of American Disposal Services. “They start as early as 2 a.m. and cannot end their days until every home and trash can is collected. Our workers have one of the most physically enduring careers out there. We are pleased to see they have earned their own special day.”

John D. Arwood, the CEO of Arwood Waste, Jacksonville, Florida, founded National Garbage Man Day in 2013 to celebrate those who work in the waste industry and to raise awareness for the garbage men and women who make our cities and homes livable. The first proclamation took place in Prince William County, Virginia, in 2014.

Each day from Monday, June 17, through Friday, June 23, American Disposal Services designated a specific surprise for its waste and recycling drivers and helpers in honor of the day, including decorated break rooms, breakfast, a cake and ice cream social and a goody bag. In addition, 300 handwritten thank you cards from Buckland Mills Elementary of Prince William County, Battlefield Elementary of Spotsylvania County and from the Boys & Girls Club of Prince William/Manassas Chapter lined the halls of the operations facility. The marketing and HR department created an internal appreciation video that was displayed in the breakroom throughout the week. It featured testimonials from the general manager and other departments expressing their gratitude to the company’s drivers and helpers.

American Disposal Services has 310 drivers and helpers in the northern Virginia area who serve the counties of Prince William, Fairfax, Arlington, Stafford, Spotsylvannia, Fauquier and Loudoun.
