Minutes
Updates
Keith Anderson: In August they will receive more RFPs.
Business is going well. Janet Davis: No program yet but hope to have one soon.
Did a one-day paint collection with the Scouts and EcoFlo, went well. Ivan Dickey: Program is out to bid. Bids are due Monday, will take 2-3 weeks to evaluate Alicia Ammons: Intern with CRA, works on America Recycles Day among
other things.
3 weeks to go. Patrick Smith: Intern with CRA, doing web site work among other things. 3 weeks
to go. Jerry Forgey: Excellent year, business growing with HHW.
Helped High Point & Tavey McDaniel: Will attend every other meeting as she works with all councils. CRA is looking to relocate the office to a building in Pittsboro, NC. It is a deconstructed farmhouse rebuilt as a “Green Building.”
They are looking at renting 3 of the 6 available offices in the
building. It has a workshop
facility for 75 people and is located near downtown Pittsboro.
Hope to be in by November, they need to raise $ to get there.
There is a stream behind the facility and an area for demonstration
projects (like composting). More
information will be distributed to CRA members for fundraising to get in this
building. The Rword will be out
near the end of this month. Eileen Benson: Permanent facility still not open.
Waiting on the final Erosion control approval for the site.
New target date is in mid September.
EcoFlo will be handling the materials in the beginning but it will
eventually go out for bid. Ivan
asked what some of the slow down has been since it was supposed to have been
opened since January. The site
location is on poor soil. Formerly
a wastewater treatment facility there is a significant amount of sludge in the
soil. Area also used for some C
& D landfilling. The City of
Concord donated the land and still operates their yard waste/ composting &
mulching program in the same area. Some
sections of the proposed site will need to be excavated up to 13 feet down
before the facility can be built. Tried
to move facility to other parts of the land but could not find workable soil. Technical Guide Debbie Meurs, all
materials collected are in boxes at her office. Does have a file of recently collected materials.
Has Keith’s submission of his PowerPoint presentation.
Needs to depersonalize it for the purposes of the tech guide.
Waiting to hear from Sherri on HHW in the Carolinas.
Jerry went over Ann’s assignments with Debbie and will submit what is
missing. RFP’s vs. contracts.
Some programs use the RFP as the contract; Debbie prefers a separate
contract. Has examples of RFP’s
but needs contracts. Ivan, Bob,
and Jerry will submit examples. From
these the committee and council will select the 1 best example from each type
of program to highlight in the guide. Still
need site plans. The introduction
and history of the council are nearly done, waiting on changes to the funding
of HHW from Denese. CESQG is
done, RFP’s are done. Site
Safety plans and training are done. Will
spend one of the future meetings sorting through all the material to finalize
the guide when ready. Still Need:
Tech Guide
Advertising A committee was
selected to work on the advertising in the guide:
Al Bouldin, Royce Batts, Ivan Dickey, and Tavey McDaniel. Group will
work on ads set up and discuss at the next meeting. Eileen will bring the GreenSpec Binder to the next meeting as an example of a possible way to do the guide. It was discussed to include the brochures from vendors so users could see the products and get more information. Ivan prefers no brochures, just the resource list to avoid it getting too bulky. Conference Workshop Ivan suggested an
overview of the Table of Contents. Slides
showing different designs. An
overview of what is in the guide and the resource list.
It was also suggested to give the guide after the intro then have a
round table discussion. 4-5 tables covering grouped areas of the guide.
A moderator will be provided per table and an overall moderator to move
the groups every 15 minutes to another table for discussion.
Ivan also suggested
giving all workshop attendees an HHW item when they enter to determine which
tables they go to first in the discussion portion. Tentative layout: 15-20 minute overview, 15 minutes @ each
table. Lab packing will also be a
part of the workshop to give practical hands-on experience.
We will offer the option to tour Buncombe County’s HHW program after
the workshop. We can expect 25-60
people to attend the workshop. SK
had 40 at their workshop in Asheville the last time. Information should be directed to municipalities but can be
promoted to large companies as well as they would follow the same procedures
if running a program. A committee was
selected to work on the HHW council’s workshop: Steve Swaim, Keith Anderson,
and Jerry Forgey Each council is being
given the opportunity to have a representative on CRA’s conference committee
this year. Steve Swaim was
selected and has accepted the responsibility since the meeting. The conference is
tentatively scheduled for March 25th-27th, 2002.
Miscellaneous A Hazardous Waste
monster is needed as a mascot for the council, Debbie & Eileen will work
on the design. Yvonne Hopkins of
Square D set up a program for the company.
It was very successful. Ask her to give a presentation on her project
at the conference and to write an article for the Rword. He program was paid for out of the recycling revenues.
Ask her as well about a submission for the Tech Guide.
Council Buddies This program was
suggested to extend the reach of our council.
We realize that many members and interested individuals are unable to
attend meetings. 13 “Core
Members” have been identified and will each take a list of names to contact
after each meeting with a personal phone call.
The intent is to get more council members involved and participating on
projects and with feedback even if they are unable to attend meetings. The “Core Members” are members of the council who have
regularly attended meetings over the past 12 months.
Other Business Ann Rudd’s father has
taken ill. A card was sent to Ann
from the entire HHW council. We would like to compile
a list of all members’ birthdays so that they may be recognized when the time
comes. Please send your birthday
(month and day only) to Tavey McDaniel TaveyM@CRA-recycle.org
or Eileen Benson ebbenson@co.cabarrus.nc.us.
