Containerboard output up, but inventories rising

Containerboard production in the United States in August rose by 0.4 percent compared with August 2019. according to the Washington-based American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA). Year to date, containerboard output has risen by 4 percent.

The containerboard mill operating rate in August was 92.1 percent, says AF&PA, which represents a 0.4 percent decline from August 2019. The average mill operating rate in 2020, however, is up by 2.7 percentage points year-to-date.

AF&P says mill inventories of containerboard at the end of August increased 35,000 short tons from the previous month, and were up 68,000 short tons compared with August 2019.

The organization also has reported that recycled-content boxboard production in the U.S. in August decreased 6 percent compared with August 2019. Year-to-date, output of the grade has declined by 2 percent.

The total boxboard mill operating rate (for recycled-content and solid bleached production) was 90.4 percent in August 2020, down by 3.6 points from August 2019, and it is down 0.4 percentage points year-to-date.
