The Full Spectrum of Plastic Pollution Plastic Ocean Projects Lab Have you ever thought about the lifecycle of a plastic bottle or container? Plastics are manufactured, filled with products, purchased by consumers, and eventually discarded. But what happens when these plastic items don't make it into recycling, or are made from materials that cant be recycled?
Join us for a day of discovery as we hop on the magic CRA school bus (well, charter bus) and explore the journey of plastics through a beach ecosystem. Our tour will begin at the Plastic Ocean Projects Lab, where we'll learn about the impact of plastics on marine, freshwater, and digestive tract environments. We'll also hear from their partners about the importance of plastic recycling.
Next, well visit an OceanSafe-certified restaurant for lunch and discover what it takes for an establishment to earn this certification, as well as the considerations involved in making food choices that benefit the environment.
After lunch, well head to the beach to see the amazing BeBot from Keep New Hanover County Beautiful in action and learn how this beach "Zamboni" helps with cleanup efforts. Then, we'll learn about monofilament recycling and how a partnership with a local Boy Scout group has helped reduce fishing line waste.
Finally, well walk along the beach, picking up trash that doesn't belong. For every 25 pounds of litter we collect, the Plastic Ocean Project will plant a tree!
