Defending Recycling Tool Kit
Recycling is under a great deal of political and financial pressure in many communities. While a few programs have faced the possibility of cancellation, they have continued to thrive by implementing creative solutions, making small changes together with their MRF partners, engaging citizen advocates, and having strong leadership in place. It is our responsibility to reduce waste in the landfill, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, care for our environment, protect public health, support industry, develop domestic markets and in- state jobs, and reclaim resources that would otherwise go to waste.
If your community’s recycling program is under threat of elimination or reduction, we strongly encourage you to advocate for your program to decision makers in your area. Here are some actions that have helped other communities in such situations:
- Build a coalition in the community of like-minded recyclers
- Start a petition in the community to keep your recycling program in place
- Start a letter writing and email campaign to your elected leaders. Local government staff do not have the ability to help save recycling programs, so you need to go straight to your board, council, commission, or other governing body including the mayor or executive officials.
- Attend public meetings with your coalition to advocate for keeping your recycling program. Public engagement is very important to local government leaders and they want to hear from you.
- Use the Resources below provided by NC DEACS, SC Commerce and SC DHEC for talking points and data to back up your statements.
The Carolina Recycling Association is available as a resource for the recycling industry. Should you have specific questions, please contact our office at 877-972-0007 or [email protected]
