Shaw Industries will invest up to $45 million in a carpet-fiber-production facility in Lexington County, S.C., allowing it to recycle more PET beverage containers into residential carpet.

The company announced that the investment will add polyester extrusion equipment using post-consumer PET containers.

The company already takes in about 3 billion containers a year at a Fayetteville, N.C. facility, a joint-venture with DAK Americas. The recycled fiber is used in the company's ClearTouch residential carpets.

Production on the new equipment will begin at the Lexington County plant in fall 2015, according to a press release. In 2005, Shaw acquired the facility from Honeywell International. It employs 290 people, and the additional investment is expected to generate another 50 jobs.

Shaw also operates a carpet recycling program, with a collection network that includes most major U.S. markets, according to the company. It reclaims and recycles about 100 million pounds of carpet a year (that number includes energy recovery).

The company, owned by Berkshire Hathaway, describes itself as the world's largest carpet manufacturer.
