Cari DeSantis, president and CEO of Upper Marlboro, Maryland-based Melwood, has announced that the organization’s Electronics Recycling Solutions Program has achieved R2 (Responsible Recycling) certification through Perry Johnson Registrars for conformance with the Responsible Recycling Standard for Electronics Recyclers.

Melwood is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization that is one of the largest employers of people with differing abilities in the northeastern United States, employing more than 800 people with differing abilities at more than 40 contract sites in Maryland, Virginia and the nation’s capital through the U.S. AbilityOne Program and partnerships with community employers.

With this certification, Melwood’s Dower House campus meets R2-specific requirements for the secure destruction of sensitive data, the organization says.

“The R2 certification demonstrates our commitment to providing our government and corporate customers with the highest level of quality assurance and responsible recycling practices,” says DeSantis. “We are proud to join a select group of industry leaders committed to business practices that protect our environment.”

Melwood earned the R2 certification after successfully completing a two-stage audit process that focused on conformance in the areas of environment and public health, worker health and safety, data and facility security and the recycling process and chain of custody for materials through final disposition.

In addition to R2 certification, Melwood obtained ISO 14001 and OSHAS 18001 certifications after meeting the applicable occupational health, safety and environmental management system guidelines.

The organization says it achieved these certifications only a year after launching its eSolutions program in partnership with eWorks, a national program designed to provide recycling services for local communities.  In addition to the traditional facilities management services offered, Melwood’s eSolutions clients will be afforded secure data and electronic equipment management services.

To date Melwood has processed more than 600,000 pounds of electronics equipment and created 23 new job opportunities for people with differing abilities.

Melwood is headquartered in Upper Marlboro, with related facilities in Temple Hills, Waldorf and Nanjemoy, Maryland. It employs more than 1,400 people.
