Ukraine sets 2016 ferrous scrap export amount

Ukraine sets 2016 ferrous scrap export amount
<![CDATA[

A government ministry in the Ukraine has set the permissible volume of ferrous scrap exports in 2016 at 1.1 million metric tons, according to an online news report from the Interfax news service.

Ukraine’s Economic Development and Trade Ministry has reportedly made that determination despite being lobbied to lower the figure. That volume “is almost the same as last year,” reports Interfax, “despite requests [from] metal [producers] and regional lawmakers to restrict” exports “due to a shortage of scrap metal on the domestic market.”

The ministry has reportedly told Interfax-Ukraine that it has set production levels throughout the steel supply chain for 2016, including that “steel smelting is set at 24.5 million metric tons for 2016, which is 6.5 percent [higher than in] 2015 (23 million metric tons).”

Likewise, the ministry projects that 4.6 million metric tons of ferrous scrap will be generated in 2016, with 3.5 million metric tons of that heading to the domestic market and the 1.1 million metric tons allotted to export.

According to the ministry, 4.28 million metric tons of ferrous scrap was generated in the Ukraine in 2015.
