AF&PA releases kraft paper and containerboard reports

The Washington-based American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) released its April 2016 U.S. Kraft Paper Report and its Containerboard Statistics Report May 17. Each report features audited 2015 and Q1 2016 data based on results from the 56th AF&PA Capacity Survey released May 10. 

According to the first report, total kraft paper shipments were 137.8 thousand short tons, which was 3.7 percent lower compared with  April 2015. Bleached kraft  paper shipments increased from 7.8 thousand short tons in March to 8.5 thousand short tons, while unbleached kraft paper decreased from 140.2 thousand to 129.3 thousand short tons. Overall, shipments in the first four months of 2016 were 1.1 percent lower compared with the same period in 2015. Total month-end inventories decreased from 82.3 thousand to 76.2 thousand short tons.
 
Containerboard production was 2.6 percent lower compared with April 2015. The month-over-month average daily production compared with March 2016 was 1.9 percent higher. The containerboard operating rate for April increased from 93 percent to 94.3 percent, and the year-to-date operating rate of 94 percent was 1.6 percentage points lower compared with the same period in 2015.
