Marine Transport International launches SOLAS VGM

As of 1 July 2016, contracting governments to the International Maritime Organization’s SOLAS (International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea) treaty will be required to implement new requirements related to the verified gross mass (VGM) of packed containers that will be shipped via ship. The new regulation puts the responsibility on the shipper to ensure that the accurate VGM is provided to the terminal/carrier for every container loaded prior to it being allowed to be loaded on a vessel.

Jody Cleworth of Marine Transport International, headquartered in the U.K., with U.S. offices in San Francisco, says, “The new SOLAS/VGM regulations will create many challenges for all parties involved in container logistics, particularly given the multiple time zones and local port protocols involved.”

In response to this global challenge, Marine Transport International and Black Swan, one of the U.K.’s leading technology companies specializing in big data, digital engineering and communication, have developed what Marine Transport International describes as “a comprehensive software solution backed by 24/7 operational support which will respond to the many eventualities posed by the new regulations.”

The new software, SOLAS VGM, is compatible with Android, Apple and PC devices and has been designed to be “neutral,” allowing all parties involved, from suppliers, haulers, shippers, freight forwarders, nonvessel operating common carrier (NVOCCs), terminals and shipping lines to work together cost-effectively and seamlessly to comply with the new regulations, Marine Transport International says.

“Our software is designed to minimize disruption for organizations who can create their own ecosystems to match their specific needs whilst taking control of the VGM process, driving efficiencies and ensuring timely compliance within the various jurisdictions around the world,” Cleworth says.

The company says it will host webinars on the product in the forthcoming weeks.
