St. George (Utah) News  reports a new recycler has opened in Cedar City to provide curbside collection of organic waste for $5 per month.

Nature’s Way Recycling, opened by Tim Ferguson and Kelton Wood, processes food waste, cardboard, paper and landscape trimmings into fertilizer. It also plans to expand into other items not recycled by the city, the article says.

“We really want to be building a sustainable future,” Ferguson told the newspaper. “Yes, this is a business, but realistically, when we can process every type of material, we can start eliminating dumps completely. And that’s a better world for everybody.”

The collected material is fed to worms every two weeks. After two to three months, 20 pounds of waste are converted into 15 pounds of fertilizer that are 50 percent more water retentive than conventional soil, according to Ferguson.
