Bridgeton Landfill LLC, a subsidiary of the Phoenix-based waste management firm Republic Services, has agreed to compensate residents of 34 homes in the vicinity of its inactive landfill in Bridgeton, Missouri, for any alleged loss of use or enjoyment of their property as a result of the subsurface reaction at its landfill.

According to several published reports, tth subsurface reaction is an underground fire that has been smoldering between 60-180 feet below the landfill’s surface for several years. The fire has created significant odor problems for residents living near the landfill.

Terms of the agreement are not being disclosed.

In a statement announcing the settlement, Bridgeton Landfill says that it has invested more than $200 million in site improvements to date to responsibly manage the effects of the subsurface reaction occurring in the landfill’s South Quarry. Investments made by the company include placing a highly advanced capping system over the South Quarry; proactively installing capping and gas collection upgrades in the North Quarry; adding more than 40 new gas wells as part of a comprehensive gas extraction system; introducing a sophisticated flare system to eliminate odorous captured gas; and constructing a leachate pretreatment facility.

The company adds that the Missouri Department of Natural Resources has made public data that confirms the efforts to mitigate the odor have been effective. The company says that the odor occurrences have been significantly reduced and ambient air testing around the facility has found no risk to human health or the environment.

Bridgeton Landfill LLC reached a settlement with several hundred other residents over the problems at the landfill site several years ago. That suit, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, totaled $6.8 million and was agreed to by about three-quarters of the residents in the 400 homes closest to the landfill.
