Government leaders throughout China need to make investments soon to handle growing amounts of municipal solid waste (MSW) and recyclable materials, said a presenter at a seminar that was part of the 2016 Eco Expo Asia event, which was held in Hong Kong in late October.

Zhang Qiuyan of China-based Guangzhou Seyia Environmental Technology Co. Ltd. said a system being piloted and now offered at commercial scale by her company provides cities with a way to extract recyclable commodities from collected, compacted MSW.

The mixed waste processing facility (MWPF) technology being offered by Guangzhou Seyia has been running in a pilot facility in north China’s Shandong Province, said Zhang. The system involves several steps, including:

  • collection of MSW by compactor trucks, and subsequent hauling to a tipping floor;
  • introduction of material into the processing system by being fed into a hopper;
  • a series of magnets to extract metals;
  • the introduction of water to be used as density separation system
  • the diversion of food scraps to go into a fermentation/anaerobic digestion process;
  • the diversion of plastics that can be sorted onsite or sent to an offsite location for sorting;
  • the diversion of sand, glass and other “heavies” to be made into a cinder block-type product;
  • the further processing of wet paper to become a pulp substitute

Zhang said the system has been four years in the making and the pilot plant in Shandong Province has been operating for six hours per day throughout much of 2016.

She said China’s MSW stream, consisting of 50% or more of organic materials such as fresh food scraps, required “a different kind of material recovery facility (MRF)” than might be used to handle streams in Europe or North America. Much of the current sorting technology, said Zhang, is “not suitable to the waste in China.”

Zhang said there are some 668 cities in China that have been identified as requiring additional investments in their waste handling or recycling infrastructures. “We have to find a way out; we need to find a clear way.”

The 2016 Eco Expo Asia, organised by Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd. and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, was Oct. 26-29 at the AsiaWorld-Expo convention center in Hong Kong.
