DuPont Performance Materials has awarded the How2Recycle Label Program a 2017 Silver Award for Packaging Innovation. In its 29th year, the awards honor companies that have demonstrated major advancements in packaging technology to address diverse and needs of consumers in markets around the world.

An independent panel of packaging experts evaluated nearly 150 entries from 24 countries and recognized those that excel in the categories of technological advancement, responsible packaging and enhanced user experience. The judging panel awarded How2Recycle for its “excellence in collaborating and facilitating packaging Innovation,” says lead judge David Luttenberger, CCP (Certified Packaging Professional), global packaging director for Mintel Group, with U.S. locations in Chicago and New York.

“How2Recycle is the first universal recycling system designed for consumers,” Luttenberger says. “Not only is How2Recycle changing the recycling behavior of consumers, but it is also catalyzing design changes in packaging.”

The How2Recycle Label Program is a standardized labeling system that communicates recycling instructions to the public. It is a project of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC). The SPC is a project of GreenBlue, Charlottesville, Virginia, a nonprofit dedicated to the sustainable use of materials in society.

Kelly Cramer, who manages the How2Recycle Label Program, says, “Great things happen when people come together to solve problems: five years ago, members of Sustainable Packaging Coalition knew that the industry needed clear, accurate and standardized recycling labels for packaging. Thanks to that foresight and investment, years later the How2Recycle label is the de facto standard for making recycling easy.”

“The DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation demonstrate how creative, committed and agile the packaging industry is in addressing global issues and consumer needs,” says Bernard Rioux, global packaging leader, DuPont Performance Materials. “This competition brings out the very best of everyone in the packaging industry, and we are thrilled to see innovators raising the bar each year.”
