Mexico may have collected up to 50 percent more PET (polyethylene terephthalate) plastic for recycling in 2016 compared with 2015, according to an estimate prepared by a food and beverage industry trade group.

Citing the Mexico-based trade association Ecoce AC, an online report posted by Mexico News Daily says companies in Mexico collected some 425,000 metric tons of PET in 2016, “up 50 percent from the previous year.”

According to Ecoce, about 56 percent of the collected PET was processed in Mexico, while the remainder was exported to other nations, including China and the United States, for processing and reprocessing.

Mexico’s recycling industry has invested some $340 million to handle PET scrap, says Ecoce, and now has “installed processing capacity of 312,000 metric tons per year,” according to the Mexico News Daily article.
