Leelanau, Michigan, reaches recycling compromise

Officials in Leelanau County, Michigan, agreed to a contribution of $25,000 for improvements to a Solon Township recycling collection site Tuesday, June 21, 2016, according to an article in the Record Eagle, Traverse City, Michigan.

“This was a difficult motion for me,” Commissioner Patricia Soutas-Little said in the meeting. “The request for improvements is really a request to tidy up the site. It is very good for the businesses in the area, and it’s convenient for the residents.”

The money will be used to construct a roughly 1,9000-square-foot concrete pad and fencing at the site, according to the article. American Waste of Kalkaska, Michigan, will contribute an additional $3,000 to the project. Solon Township declined to contribute money to the project and did not attend the meeting.

Commissioner Debra Rushton expressed concerns about the fairness of spending more than the $11,000 given to the Elmwood Township recycling site, the newspaper says. Commissioner Ty Wessel pointed out that different townships require different solutions.

“We gave [Elmwood] what they needed, and that was $11,000,” Solid Waste Chairman Bill Perkins said in the meeting. “What is needed in Solon is $28,000.”

The next township meeting is scheduled for July 14, a day after the expiration of the contract between the county and the township, the article says. Discussions will commence to keep the facility open, Perkins said.
