Fox43, York, Pennsylvania, reports 10 drop-off locations in Dauphin County will no longer accept glass starting Aug. 1, 2016, because of rising disposal costs.
The locations discontinuing glass collection services are:
- Conewago Township Municipal Building, 3279 Old Hershey Rd., Elizabethtown;
- Dauphin County Recycling Center 1625 S. Cameron St., Harrisburg;
- Gratz Borough Community Center, 125 N. Center St.;
- Deppen Park, Halifax Borough, Route 225, ¼-mile outside borough;
- Uptown Shopping Plaza parking lot, Harrisburg City, 7th St. & Division St.;
- Highspire Borough, Lumber and Broad St.;
- Boxers Parking Lot, Lykens Borough;
- Millersburg Borough, Front Street and Keystone Road;
- Lykens Valley Plaza parking lot, Washington Township/Elizabethville Borough; and
- Williamstown Borough Municipal Building, Williamstown Borough/Williams Township.
“Unfortunately, recyclers are refusing to accept recycled glass because there is no demand,” Commissioner Mike Pries told Fox43. “We have been paying around $1,200 a month to dispose of glass, and that is not an expense taxpayers should shoulder.”
He added the county would accept glass if market demand resumes. The bins will be used for plastics in the meantime, the article says.
“We are committed to recycling, but we cannot afford to pay thousands of dollars to dispose of materials for which there is no demand,” said Board of Commissioners Chairman Jeff Haste. “In March, we had to restrict electronics recycling to county residents only to ensure we would not starting collecting so much that we would have to start paying to get rid of items.”
