The Garden City (Michigan) Observer reports Rizzo Services, Sterling Heights, Michigan, launched a curbside recycling program Aug. 1, 2016, in Garden City, saving the city around $55,000 in landfill tipping fees.

Some 25 percent of households, or 3,000 homes, have requested 65-gallon recycling carts from Rizzo since the program began, the Observer reports.

“It speaks highly of residents of our town that recycling is as important to them as it is,” Garden City Department of Public Services (DPS) Director Kevin Roney told the Observer. “As the word gets out and neighbors notice carts up and down the streets, they will be calling for their own carts. We’re still early in the program.”

In addition, bulk pickups will now be conducted with regularly scheduled collection services, without residents having to call DPS in advance, the article says.
