South Dakota government agency awards grants, loans for waste management projects

South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard has announced that the state’s Board of Water and Natural Resources has approved $860,370 for six solid waste management projects. The total includes $545,170 in grants and $315,200 in low-interest loans.

“I am pleased to announce that this money is available to assist local communities,” says Gov. Daugaard in a release. “Grant and loan awards will result in enhanced protection of the environment.”

The money awarded by the board are administered through the state’s Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

Recipients of the grants and the total amount are the following:

  • Ecomaniacs, a $4,000 grant for recycling education equipment
  • The City of Madison, a $17,000 grant for restricted use site expansion
  • The City of Naples, a $23,840 grant for dump site cleanup and remediation
  • The City of Seneca, a $23,900 grant for dump site cleanup and remediation
  • Tri-County Landfill Association, $3,630 grant for geothermal piping system for storage building heat

The state also has awarded the Northwest South Dakota Regional Landfill a total of $788,000 for construction of landfill cell #3. The money allocated to the landfill includes a $472,800 grant and a $315,200 loan.

The Solid Waste Management Program provides grants and loans for solid waste disposal, recycling and waste tire projects.
