TAPPI announces deadline for Distinguished Service Award

TAPPI announces deadline for Distinguished Service Award
<![CDATA[

TAPPI, a Peachtree Corners, Georgia-based association for the paper and packaging industry, has announced an August 1 application deadline for its Herman L. Joachim Distinguished Service Award.

Established in 1983, the TAPPI Herman L. Joachim Distinguished Service Award is the highest honor the association says it bestows upon an individual for exemplary leadership that has significantly contributed to the advancement of the association.

“Helping to advance the TAPPI mission and contributing to its successful management, structure and organization in ways that help members work better, faster and more efficiently within the industry are hallmarks of the Herman L. Joachim Distinguished Service Award,” says the association.

Tom Rodencal, the 2017 winner of the award, was selected for “his extraordinary efforts over the course of 20 years, which resulted in significant enhancements to numerous TAPPI conferences, divisions and committees,” TAPPI says. Rodencal is president of Tom Rodencal & Associates, an industry consulting firm. He has been a member of TAPPI for more than 35 years.

Applications for next year’s award are due August 1. To view the nominations form, click here.

As this is the highest achievable honor for leadership at TAPPI, the association says judges look for structural, financial, managerial, image and membership improvements that have had significant impact on TAPPI, its members and program offerings. Recipients of the Joachim Award receive:

 • TAPPI lifetime membership exempt from dues;
 • automatic TAPPI Fellow designation;
 • cash honorarium worth 5 percent of fair market value (currently estimated between $60,000 and $80,000);
 • wall plaque for display; and
 • lapel pin.

Herman L. Joachim was a TAPPI member for more than 70 years. He joined TAPPI while working as a chemist at the Bogalusa Paper Company in Louisiana. Later he managed paper mills throughout the United States and was responsible for expansions and modernizations in the industry. He also enjoyed a successful career as an engineering consultant.

In 1994, Herman L. Joachim’s gift of $500,000 was used to establish the Herman L. Joachim Distinguished Service Award Fund.
