ISRI board to vote on proposed specification for flexible PVC

The board of directors for the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI), Washington, will consider the addition of a flexible PVC specification to the organization’s Scrap Specifications Circular at its Spring Meeting April 16 during the 2018 ISRI Convention & Exposition. ISRI’s Plastics Division approved the new specification during ISRI’s Winter Board and Governance meetings in January.

The proposed specification for flexible PVC reads:

Description: Typically consists of molding, weather stripping, flexible tubing, purging, battery covers, medical tubing, auto decals, flexible films and sheeting. It is typically resistant to chemicals, nonporous and extruded. It can be found in long profiles and can be wound onto a reel.

Product: PVC Bale

Source: Postconsumer or postindustrial (including preconsumer)

Technical Information: Durometer Level less than 90A

Explanation of the Durometer Scale: Explanation of the Shore Scale: Shore durometer measurement devices can be used to measure the indentation of a prescribed needle into the material. The test method conforms to ASTM D2240. Flexible PVC is typically measured using the A scale.

Contamination: 

Prohibitives – material not accepted at any level, 0 percent allowed.

a.            PET (polyethylene terephthalate) plastic of any form

b.            Medical and hazardous waste

Contamination material allowed at small percentages

a.            Plastics other than PVC, such as HDPE (high-density polyethylene), LDPE (low-density polyethylene), PP (polypropylene), PS (polystyrene)

b.            Rigid PVC

c.             Liquids

d.            Paper and cardboard

e.            Ferrous and nonferrous metals

f.             Glue, adhesives, sticky tape

g.            Co-extruded materials

h.            Reinforcement weaves and fabrics

At its meeting, the board may choose to adopt, amend or reject the recommendations of the ISRI Plastics Division or table them pending further review.

More information about the rules governing the procedures from the addition, amendment or withdrawal of ISRI’s scrap specifications can be found in the Scrap Specifications Circular. To submit comments, recommendations or questions, please contact either Bernie Lee or Joe Pickard. An open comment period will extend for 30 days following the vote by the board.
