Finland-based Valmet Oyj has announced it will supply two new containerboard production lines with related automation systems for Hong Kong-based Nine Dragons Industries Co. Ltd. at mills in China.

One of the two production lines (Nine Dragons’ PM 43) will be located in Dongguan in South China and the other (PM 45) in Quanzhou in Fujian Province. Valmet indicates the two new lines are similar to four previous containerboard production lines it supplied in 2017 (Nine Dragons PMs 39 through 42).

The two newest containerboard production lines will be designed to produce testliner grades out of 100 percent recovered fiber as raw material (as were the previous four). The start-ups of PM 43 and PM 45 are scheduled for 2019 while the four previous production lines are scheduled to start in succession during mid-2018.

Valmet states the value of the orders will not be disclosed, but also indicates “an order of this type and scale is typically around €90 to €110 million ($110 to $135 million).”

“Nine Dragons is committed to produce high-quality containerboard products,” says MC Liu, deputy chairman and CEO of Nine Dragons. “We can deliver this promise with Valmet’s technically advanced board machines. Advanced technology and the modern and distinctive industrial design were certainly important factors in these decisions. I’m pleased that Nine Dragons has had such a good cooperation with Valmet in the negotiation of these six machines and all the previous projects.”

Jari Vähäpesola, president of the paper business line for Valmet, comments, “Nine Dragons’ decision to purchase six-in-a-row energy- and resource-efficient containerboard machines is quite exceptional. The company values our innovative, modernly designed and sustainable board-making technology. We are pleased to continue the good cooperation with Nine Dragons.”

The paper machine lines will include steam and condensate systems, broke collection pulpers for stock preparation, a board machine from headbox to winder including a full scope automation package, and process ventilation equipment.

Founded in 1995, Nine Dragons Paper Group bills itself as the world’s largest recovered paper-based paper manufacturing firm measured by production capacity. The company and its subsidiaries produce linerboard, corrugating medium and coated duplex board. The group also produces printing and writing paper and specialty paper and it has 100 percent ownership of Hebei Yongxin Paper Co. Ltd. in China.
