Stainless output rises in 2017
<![CDATA[

The Brussels-based International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF) has released figures for 2017 showing that stainless steel melt shop production increased by 5.8 percent year–on–year to 48.1 million metric tons.

By percentage, the United States enjoyed the largest output rise among large nations, with its 2.75 million metric tons of output representing an 11 percent rise from the 2.48 million metric tons it produced in 2016.

By volume, China remains the world leader, with the nearly 25.8 million metric tons of stainless steel it produced in 2017 rising by 4.7 percent from its 24.6 million metric tons of output in 2016.

Europe’s stainless steel producers had 7.38 million metric tons of output in 2017, up just 1.3 percent from the 7.28 million metric tons produced in 2016.

The ISSF’s “other” nations category was the fastest riser in 2017. The 4.15 million metric tons of output in 2017 in those nations points to a 22 percent rise in production from the 3.4 million metric tons they produced in 2016. (The “other” nations as defined by the ISSF are Brazil, Russia, South Africa, South Korea and Indonesia.)

The ISSF, founded in 1996, describes itself as representing the interests of the international stainless steel industry toward the general public, consumers, the media and regulatory authorities.
