Adidas reportedly commits to recycled-content plastics

Germany-based sportswear marker Adidas will reportedly adjust its manufacturing operations between now and 2024 to use exclusively recycled-content plastic by that year.

News outlets, including CNN, are citing an article in the Financial Times that reports the firm has made a “pledge” to eliminate the use of virgin plastics in clothing it makes, as well as in its offices, retail stores and distribution centers.

As of July 17, any such pledge is not yet posted to the firm’s website.

The firm does point to having worked with the New York-based ocean preservation group Parley to use plastic reclaimed from the ocean to manufacture sportswear, including running shoes and jerseys for the Real Madrid soccer team.

The company’s UltraBOOST X shoe uses reclaimed plastic equivalent to that found in 11 plastic bottles, according to the firm.

 “At adidas, we believe that sport has the power to change lives,” says Andre Maestrini, general manager of Adidas Sports Business Units, regarding its efforts with Parley.
