The Brussels-based World Steel Association (WorldSteel) has reported that global crude steel production for the 64 countries reporting to it amounted to 154.6 million metric tons in July 2018, a 5.8 percent increase compared with July 2017.

Output in the world’s largest steel producing nation, China, was up by 7.2 percent in July compared with the year-ago monthly figure. The nation’s steelmakers produced 81.2 million metric tons of steel in July 2018, or more than half of the global total.

In nearby Japan and South Korea steel production was not as robust in July. Japanese mills produced 8.4 million metric tons of crude steel in July 2018, down by 2 percent compared with July 2017. South Korea’s crude steel production was essentially flat (up by 0.1 percent compared with July 2017) at 6.2 million metric tons.

In the United States, where President Trump has been enacting tariffs to protect steelmakers, mills there produced 7.3 million metric tons of crude steel in July, an increase of 4.5 percent compared with July 2017

Turkey, now one of the targets of U.S. tariffs, produced 3.3 million metric tons of crude steel in July, down by 2.3 percent compared with July 2017.

The mill capacity utilization rate globally, according to WorldSteel, was 77.5 percent in July 2018, up by 3.8 percentage points compared with July 2018, but 1.4 percentage points lower compared with June 2018.

Year to date, after seven months in the books, global steel output is up by 5 percent compared with 2017. Despite global concerns about mill overcapacity in China, output there has risen by 6.3 percent in 2018. Vietnam, with 29.5 percent and 1.7 million metric tons in year-to-date output growth, is one of the biggest gainers in 2018. On the flip side among large-to-medium-sized producers, Canada’s year-to-date output is down by 3.3 percent, or 250,000 metric tons.
