Brussels-based Umicore has announced an audit has “reinforced its compliance with the European final treatment standard for copper and precious metal bearing WEEE (waste electrical and electronic equipment) fractions” as determined by Brussels-based CENELEC.

The audit was conducted by Lloyd’s, which Umicore calls an independent provider of assurance services for a variety of standards, schemes and customized assurance programs.

The CENELEC standard “offers the global [electronic scrap] recycling industry a good framework and reference of what real end-processing of a crucial part of the electronic [scrap] stream is,” according to Umicore. The audit “also should give authorities and producers the guarantee that the often most critical WEEE-fractions – both from an environmental as well as an economical perspective – are dealt with in an efficient and sustainable manner,” adds the multi-national firm.

Umicore also credits the CENELEC standard for considering recycling to be “a multi-step activity, not limited to collection and pre-processing, but also encompassing end processing, the stage at which complex end-of-life products are turned into new materials for the manufacturing industry.”

At its smelting plant in Hoboken, Belgium, Umicore Precious Metals Refining converts a variety of precious metal-bearing materials, including electronic scrap, into more than 15 different metals, including copper and precious metals.

“We are convinced that this end processor standard can contribute to enhancing the overall performance of the recycling chain, creating a more level playing field for [electronic scrap] recycling in Europe and beyond, thereby combatting illegal practices or the use of inefficient and harmful technologies,” states Umicore.

The company’s certificate can be found on its website on this page.                                                                                                                                                                                  ]]>
