Strautmann displays beverage container recycling technology

Germany-based Strautmann Umwelttechnik presented its beverage bottle recycling systems at the BrauBeviale trade fair in Nuremberg, Germany, in mid-November. Strautmann says its machinery offers reliability and innovation for the emptying and compaction of PET bottles, aluminum beverage cans and TetraPak cartons.

At the November trade fair, the firm offered information and a display on its LiquiDrainer and BrikPress machines, with which Strautmann says customers can “get an immediate optimization” of their recycling processes.

The LiquiDrainer handles full beverage containers, which can be introduced manually, by conveyor belt or forklift. Up to 10,000 one-liter (32-ounce) beverage bottles can be inserted and emptied within one hour.

A feed rocker feeds the material to a rotor, which pierces the beverage containers so the liquid can escape. This same process can “devalue” the containers in product destruction applications, preventing the containers from getting back into circulation. The liquids are drained and go through a coarse filter so they can be sold to biogas plants.

The Strautmann BrikPress then bales PET containers after the LiquiDrainer. Through conveyor belts or a forklift, the press can be fed 24/7. With a throughput of 50,000 bottles in one hour, the material is compacted with 380 kilonewtons (kN) of force into compacted briquettes. The briquettes can then be stored in shipping containers.
