World crude steel production increases year over year in October

World crude steel production for the 64 countries reporting to the Brussels- based World Steel Association (Worldsteel) was 156.6 million metric tons in October 2018, or 5.8 percent higher than it was in October 2017.

The U.S. lead the other reporting countries in terms of production gains for the month. The country’s steelmakers produced 7.6 million metric tons of crude steel in October 2018, an increase of 10.5 percent compared with October 2017.

That production figure was dwarfed by China’s crude steel production for the month, however. That country produced 82.6 million metric tons of crude steel, an increase of 9.1 percent compared with October 2017, according to Worldsteel.

India, which produced 8.8 million metric tons, saw a slight increase of 0.4 percent from its production in October 2017, while South Korea’s production grew by 3.5 percent from October 2017 to 6.2 million metric tons.

Japan’s crude steel production, however, decreased year over year by 4.5 percent to 8.6 million metric tons in October 2018.

In the EU, France produced 1.3 million metric tons of crude steel in October 2018, Worldsteel reports, which is a 3.5 percent decrease compared with October 2017. Spain also saw its production decline year over year by 7.4 percent, having produced 1.3 million metric tons in October 2018. Turkey’s production for October 2018 was 3.2 million metric tons, a decrease of 4.3 percent compared with October 2017. Also posting a decline in production for October was Ukraine. At 1.8 million metric tons, that country produced 6.7 percent less than in October 2017.

Italy’s crude steel production for October 2018 saw modest growth, having increased by 1.1 percent to 2.3 million metric tons.
