Crude steel production makes modest gain in January

World crude steel production showed modest growth of 1 percent in January 2019 compared with the prior year. January 2019 production for the 64 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (Worldsteel), Brussels, totaled 146.7 million metric tons.

Among the countries posting production increases relative to January 2018, the U.S. led the way. That nation’s crude steel production increased 11 percent in January 2019, hitting 7.6 million metric tons.

At 19.5 percent, Turkey suffered the greatest production decline relative to the prior year, producing 2.6 million tons of crude steel in January of this year, according to Worldsteel.

According to an estimate from the Beijing-based China Iron and Steel Association (CISA), China’s crude steel production for the month increased 4.3 percent compared with January 2018, reaching 75 million metric tons.

Other Asian countries posted declining production, however, according to Worldsteel. India produced 9.2 million metric tons of crude steel in January 2019, 1.9 percent less than in January 2018. Japan produced 8.1 million metric tons of crude steel, 9.8 less than one year earlier, while South Korea’s crude steel production stood at 6.2 million metric tons, 1.5 percent less than the country produced in January 2018.

In the European Union, Italy’s crude steel production for January 2019 was 2 million metric tons, 3.6 percent less than in January 2018. At 1.2 million metric tons, France’s production decreased 9.7 percent compared with January 2018. Spain, on the other hand, produced 1.2 million metric tons of crude steel in January 2019, an increase of 5.9 percent compared with the previous year.

Crude steel production in Ukraine decreased 4.9 percent from January 2018, reaching 1.9 million metric tons in January 2019.

Brazil’s crude steel production for January 2019 was 2.9 million metric tons, Worldsteel reports, 2.3 percent more than that country produced in January 2018.
