The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) and the Instituteof Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI), both based in Washington, have released statements concerning the Feb. 28 Senate confirmation of former coal lobbyist Andrew Wheeler to head the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Wheeler was confirmed by a vote of 52 to 47.

The statement ISRI issued from its President Robin Wiener reads: “ISRI is pleased the Senate confirmed Andrew Wheeler as the new EPA administrator. Administrator Wheeler was instrumental in hosting an America Recycles Day conference at the EPA last year where ISRI was able to explain the many challenges the recycling industry faces while reaffirming the longstanding and critical role the recycling industry plays in both the nation’s manufacturing chain as well as environmental protection.”

She adds that the scrap recycling industry recycles in excess of 130 million metric tons of materials annually, protecting the environment, conserving natural resources and creating more than 530,000 jobs.

“Administrator Wheeler understands and appreciates our vibrant industry, and we look forward to working with him and his staff to further improve recycling in the United States,” Wiener writes.

The statement from AF&PA President and CEO Donna Harman states, “We congratulate Andrew Wheeler on his Senate confirmation as EPA Administrator and look forward to partnering with him to advance forward-thinking public policy that ensures regulations do more good than harm.”

Harmon notes that the forest and paper industry accounts for approximately 4 percent of U.S. manufacturing gross domestic product (GDP) and employs approximately 950,000 workers.

“With supportive public policy in place, there’s ample room to grow these numbers as our industry applies sustainable manufacturing processes to do what it does best – produce the products that make everyday life easier,” Harmon adds.
