Irving, Texas, to conduct Rubicon Global smart city pilot

The city of Irving, Texas, has selected Atlanta-based Rubicon Global to provide a smart city pilot program designed to improve residential waste and recycling services for its 240,000-plus residents. 

Starting in April, Irving will use the RUBICONSmartCity platform in a six-month pilot program designed to enhance its waste and recycling offerings and outcomes in terms of sustainability and customer service through the integration of technology.

Irving has more than 40 collection vehicles that serve approximately 42,000 locations, all of which will be a part of this pilot program, Rubicon says in a news release about the program. The city of Irving is most interested in generating data for route optimization and management for its waste, recycling and brush vehicles, as well as in collecting data and documentation on the volume of material picked up for every route, during the pilot. 

The RUBICONSmartCity platform includes a smartphone loaded with the Rubicon app, as well as an onboard computer plug-in device. Both will be placed in the city’s collection vehicles. This technology allows for the collection of real-time service confirmations, provides GPS vehicle tracking and enables documentation of any driver issues or the inability to successfully complete a pickup. The manager portal in RUBICONSmartCity will collect the data and analytics and show the city real-time route updates, daily reporting and operational insights, according to Rubicon’s news release.

Rubicon Global says RUBICONSmartCity has been rolled out in more than 30 cities across the U.S., including Atlanta; Columbus, Georgia; Fort Collins, Colorado; Montgomery, Alabama; Philadelphia; Santa Fe, New Mexico; Spokane, Washington; Tyler, Texas; and West Memphis, Arkansas. The solution is also available on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) marketplace and the HGACBuy consortium.
