Rhode Island scrap yard catches fire

About 70 firefighters extinguished a fire at Sims Metal Management’s scrap recycling yard on April 1 at Fields Point Drive in Providence, Rhode Island. According to a news release shared in the Providence Journal newspaper, about 20 cars caught fire as they were being crushed.

The Fields Point Drive site purchases and processes ferrous and nonferrous scrap metal and electronic scrap, according to Sims Metal Management, headquartered in Rye, New York. The recycling center specializes in customized scrap management, stainless steel operations and bus, railcar and aluminum trailer recycling. Services offered by the yard include industrial, obsolete and demo scrap, as well as trucking and roll-off container services. Processing capabilities include wet car processing, baling, mobile baling, car crushing, shearing and torch cutting. 

According to the Providence Journal news release, some equipment and a building were damaged as a result of the fire. The Providence Journal reports that no one was injured and that the cause of this fire is still under investigation.
