Sacramento, California, has launched a free SacRecycle app that provides residents quick access to waste and recycling information, such as recycling calendars, reminder notifications and the Waste Wizard, a database of hundreds of household items and proper disposal methods in Sacramento.
The app aims to increase the amount of recyclable material in recycling bins, while reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill. California has set an ambitious goal of 75 percent recycling, composting or source reduction of solid waste by 2020; however, the state reported a 44 percent recycling rate in 2017, down from 47 percent in 2015 and 50 percent in 2014.
“We’re hearing anecdotally people saying, you know, ‘It’s just too much bother. I’m not going to think about it. I’m just going to throw everything in the garbage,’” Erin Treadwell with the City of Sacramento told CBS Sacramento.
While an interactive waste sorting game is geared toward kids, the city is targeting confused residents with the Waste Wizard, a search bar tool that allows residents to search items they’re not sure how to recycle or dispose of.
“We have created an easy to use Waste Wizard to help residential customers sort their waste properly,” the city states on its website. “Some materials are ‘banned’ from the can and require you to either schedule an appointment for material pickup or drop-off materials at a local facility.”
Customers enter their billing address to receive their collection schedules and turn on notifications for pickup days. Residents who are not city customers can still access the waste wizard disposal information and waste sorting game.
The app is provided by the Recycling and Solid Waste Division, which provides waste, recycling, yard waste collection and street sweeping to more than 124,000 residential customers in Sacramento.
The division collects approximately 250,000 tons of waste and material and sweeps more than 150,000 miles of public streets per year. Yard waste comprises of 80,000 tons of annual material collection, with about 250,000 tons picked up during leaf season. Recycling amounts to 35,000 tons of material per year.
