June containerboard production up slightly

Containerboard production in June 2019 decreased 6.6 percent compared with June 2018 and was down 4.9 percent year to date, according to a news release from Washington-based American Forest & Paper Association’s (AF&PA’s) latest monthly containerboard report. The average daily production compared with May 2019 was 0.6 percent higher.

AF&PA reports that the containerboard operating rate decreased from 91.8 percent in May to 89.1 percent. The total linerboard rate dropped below 90 percent for the fourth time this year, down to 86.3 percent. The June total operating rate was 7.1 points lower than the same month last year and the year-to-date operating rate was down 6.2 points compared to last year. Production for export, most of which is linerboard, was down 11.5 percent month-over-month and was down 18.6 percent year-to-date.

Total boxboard production decreased 3.7 percent when compared with June 2018, AF&PA reports in its latest boxboard production report. The total boxboard operating rate was 92 percent for June. Total solid bleached boxboard and liner production was down 7.8 percent year to date; Recycled Boxboard production fell 3.3 year to date; and unbleached kraft and gypsum increased 1.8 percent year to date.

Additionally, printing-writing paper shipments decreased 17 percent in June compared with June 2018. AF&PA reports that U.S. purchases of total printing-writing papers declined 11 percent in June compared with June 2018. Total printing-writing paper inventory levels declined 2 percent from May 2019 as well.
