Global crude steel production reached 1.87 billion metric tons in 2019, an increase of 3.4 percent compared with global output in 2018, according to figures from the World Steel Association (Worldsteel), Brussels. With the exceptions of Asia, which was led by production growth in China, and the Middle East, crude steel production contracted in all other global regions in 2019.

Asia produced 1.34 billion metric tons of crude steel in 2019, or 5.7 percent more than it produced in 2018. China’s crude steel production in 2019 reached 996.3 million metric tons, an increase of 8.3 percent from its 2018 production. China’s share of global crude steel production increased from 50.9 percent in 2018 to 53.3 percent in 2019, according to Worldsteel. India’s crude steel production for 2019 was 111.2 million metric tons, an increase of 1.8 percent from its 2018 production, while Japan produced 99.3 million metric tons in 2019, or 4.8 percent less than it made in 2018. South Korea produced 71.4 million metric tons of crude steel in 2019, a decrease of 1.4 percent compared with 2018.

The European Union produced 159.4 million of crude steel in 2019, a decrease of 4.9 percent compared with 2018, according to Worldsteel. Germany led in decreased production, having made 39.7 million metric tons of crude steel in 2019—6.5 percent less than in 2018. Italy produced 23.2 million metric tons for the year, a decrease of 5.2 percent compared with 2018. France produced 14.5 million metric tons of crude steel, a decrease of 6.1 percent compared with its 2018 production, while Spain produced 13.6 million metric tons, 5.2 percent less than in 2018.

Crude steel production in North America was 120 million metric tons in 2019, 0.8 percent lower than in 2018, Worldsteel says. The U.S. produced 87.9 million metric tons of that total production, 1.5 percent more than it produced in 2018. Canada produced 12.8 million metric tons in 2019, a decline of 4.9 percent compared with its 2018 crude steel production. Mexico saw its production decline by 8 percent compared with 2018, falling from 20.2 million metric tons in 2018 to 18.6 million metric tons in 2019.

Worldsteel notes that the CIS (the countries that formerly made up the Soviet Union) produced 100.4 million metric tons, a decrease of 0.5 percent compared with 2018 crude steel production. Russia produced 71.6 million metric tons of crude steel in 2019, down by 0.7 percent from 2018, while Ukraine produced 20.8 million metric tons in 2019, a decrease of 1.2% compared with 2018.

The Middle East produced 45.3 million metric tons of crude steel in 2019, an increase of 19.2 percent compared with 2018. Iran, the region’s largest producer, increased production by 30.1 percent in 2019, making 31.9 million metric tons compared with 24.5 million metric tons in 2018.

Annual crude steel production for South America was 41.2 million metric tons in 2019, a decrease of 8.4 percent from the previous year. Brazil, the region’s largest producer, made 32.2 million metric tons in 2019, according to Worldsteel, down by 9 percent from 2018’s production.

Turkey’s crude steel production for 2019 was 33.7 million metric tons, 9.6 million metric tons less than in 2018.

Africa produced 17 million metric tons of crude steel in 2019, down 2.3 percent compared with 2018.

Oceania produced 6.1 million metric tons of crude steel in 2019, 2.9 percent less than in 2018.
