The Northeast Recycling Council (NERC), Brattleboro, Vermont, has published the third in a series of quarterly reports on the blended value of 1 ton of materials marketed at material recovery facilities (MRFs) in the organization’s 11-state region of Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont.

“Blended Commodity Values in the Northeast – February 2020" covers the period from October through December 2019. An additional MRF participated in the survey, bringing the number of participating MRFs from around the region to 15, NERC says. The new addition is the first privately owned MRF to share data that is incorporated into the report.

NERC has also published “Blended Commodity Values in the Northeast – August 2019" and “Blended Commodity Values in the Northeast – November 2019."

The latest report reveals some interesting trends, according to NERC:

  • The cost to process 1 ton of material through a MRF increased by 5 percent over the three quarters surveyed, increasing from $82 per ton from April through June to $87 per ton from October through December.
  • The value of 1 ton of MRF materials increased slightly between the second and third quarters of the reports, though it was still greater in the first quarter of reporting. From April through June of last year, the value ranged from $45.83 with residuals to $51.65 without residuals. The value fell in the July through September quarter to a range of $34.85 to $41.55 before increasing to a range of $34.92 to $42.41 in the quarter spanning October through December.
  • Nevertheless, overall the value has decreased by 24 percent for material with residuals and by 18 percent for material without residuals, NERC says.

The survey will be repeated for the quarter spanning January through March 2020, and NERC says it anticipates expanding the number of MRFs participating in the survey.
