Sims Metal Management is using a Liebherr model LHM 600 harbor crane to load scrap and unload salt from piers in the New York Harbor operating area of the Port of New York and New Jersey.

Liebherr says the crane is placed on a floating barge and can be moved from terminal to terminal in the port area when required. With a maximum lifting capacity of 75 tons, using a four-rope grab operation, “the crane is the strongest floating mobile harbor crane on a barge in the United States in a four-rope grab capacity,” says Liebherr.

The crane, which has been in operation in since November 2019, offers Sims Metal Management “various advantages,” according to Liebherr. Since the company operates from two different terminals in New York Harbor, the mobility of being barge-mounted is one advantage, says the firm. Sims Metal Management operates from one terminal in the Port of Newark, New Jersey, and from Claremont terminal in Jersey City, which is about 6 miles away.

The Liebherr mobile harbor crane also can move alongside a sizable barge to reach additional hatches without having to move the larger vessel. “The operation from the barge means no adjustments to the port infrastructure are necessary, and the space gained at the [pier] edge can also be used as storage and operational space,” states Liebherr.

The Liebherr LHM 600 mobile harbor crane being used by Sims is equipped with a 750 kilowatt (kW) Liebherr diesel engine designed to comply with United States Environmental Protection Agency Tier 4 emissions standards.

The crane is equipped with a maximum lifting capacity of up to 144 metric tons. In four-rope grab operation, up to 75 metric tons can be lifted, “making the LHM 600 [operated by] Sims the most powerful mobile harbor crane on a barge in the U.S.,” states Liebherr.

The LHM 600 also has a Pactronic hybrid system installed as an additional power booster. Its main feature is an additional energy storage device, an accumulator, that is charged by surplus power from the conventional drive unit when the load is lowered.

Sims Metal Management also benefits from the Liebherr analysis software LiDAT smartApp, says Liebherr. The app is installed to provide analysis and optimization of cargo handling processes.
