Sheldon F. Tauben, founder of Metalsco Inc., a scrap business based in St. Louis, died peacefully Oct. 23 in Delray Beach, Florida. Tauben was born Jan. 19, 1925, in New York City to the late Edna and William Tauben.

Sheldon was a husband to the late Claire (Lane) for 55 years and a father to Bret (Janet), Scott (Melodie) and Jamie (Howard) Demsky. He is also survived by a sister Charlene Ehrlich. Sheldon was a grandfather to Elizabeth, Alexandra and Lindsay Tauben as well as Dana and Sarah Demsky.

Sheldon was a decorated veteran of World War II, serving with the 75th Infantry Division in France and Belgium. He received a bachelor’s degree from Adelphi University in New York and received a master’s degree from Cornell University in modern European history. Sheldon spent more than 55 years working in the scrap metal industry. According to his obituary, he was an expert in the copper recycling industry. He founded Metalsco in 1976 and remained active as president and chairman for more than 30 years. 

Currently, Tauben’s sons Bret and Scott are managing partners of Metalsco.
