Zurich-based packaging producer Amcor has released its 2020 sustainability report, available at www.amcor.com/sustainability-report, saying it has achieved progress in its efforts to reduce plastic waste.

In the welcome to the report, Amcor CEO Ron Delia writes, “We believe responsible packaging requires product innovation, waste management infrastructure and consumer participation. This approach guides our investment in best-in-class research and development (R&D) capabilities; our partnerships to encourage the expansion of contemporary waste management infrastructure; and our work with brands to help inspire consumers to recycle more.”

The report details efforts Amcor has taken across its rigids, flexibles and specialty cartons businesses:

  • Products that have been designed to be recyclable total $7.71 billion of the company’s revenue.
  • Amcor increased its use of postconsumer resin (PCR) to more than 83,000 metric tons in 2020, reducing CO2 emissions by more than 100,000 metric tons. According to the report, this represents 4.3 percent of its total resin purchased by weight and 2.7 percent of its total materials purchased.
  • The company has reduced waste disposal from operations by more than 3,200 metric tons, or 10 percent, in 2020.
  • Amcor’s partnerships activity increased as Amcor joined WWF ReSource: Plastic, a global consortium of companies and organizations collaborating to keep waste out of the environment.

The report also notes that Amcor used 436,268 metric tons of bio-based raw materials in 2020, which was roughly 14 percent of its total materials. “While the majority of these were fiber, used primarily in our Specialty Cartons business, we also increased product launches involving bio-based resins. Packages made from bio-based resins have proven to be viable alternatives to traditional resins,” the report reads.

The report also features sustainable product innovations from Amcor, including a 100 percent recycled polyethylene terephthalate bottle the company produced for Ritual Vitamins a flexible pouch for Method that incorporates PCR and Nespresso coffee capsules made with Aluminum Stewardship Initiative-certified aluminum.

David Clark, vice president for sustainability at Amcor, says, “At Amcor we believe that winning for the environment means that we are winning as a business. As a market leader, we’re committed to using our innovation capabilities to ensure that all of our products are recyclable or reusable by 2025–but we know that this is only one stage of the cycle. A sustainable, responsible approach to packaging requires more than just recyclable products, it also needs infrastructure development and customer action. This year’s sustainability report outlines our continued work to achieve more sustainable outcomes and to use our unique position to accelerate more sustainable solutions.”

Amcor says the report has been prepared in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards: Core option and Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) Containers & Packaging Sustainability Accounting Standard version 2018-10. This is the ninth year that Amcor has reported in accordance with GRI and the first year it has reported using the SASB Standards.
