Winchester, Virginia-based Trex Co. is working with Boise, Idaho-based retailer Albertsons Cos. to collect and recycle plastic bulk medication dispensing bottles from some of Albertsons’ nearly 1,700 pharmacies.

Trex, which makes recycled plastic-content decking and other building products, says it has collected more than 27 tons of bulk medication bottles, the contents of which are used to fill individual prescriptions.

The new effort expands upon a decades-long partnership in which Albertsons has supplied more than 100,000 tons of plastic film to be recycled, which Trex says is the equivalent of more than 5,000 truckloads. That effort is part of the NexTrex plastic film recycling program for retailers and consumers.

“Our associates throughout our stores and pharmacies have championed this effort and are excited that these plastic bottles will have a second life,” says Erin Shaal, senior director of pharmacy procurement at Albertsons. “Pharmacists and pharmacy associates at participating locations are meticulously prepping the bottles for recycling,” adds Shaal. “We’re very thankful for this level of dedication and excited to play a role in our company’s broader commitment to reduce, reuse and recycle plastic.”

Trex says it launched its medication bottle recycling program at Acme pharmacies in the eastern United States; at Albertsons, Vons, Safeway and Pavilions pharmacies in the West; and at Jewel-Osco pharmacies in the Chicago area.

“NexTrex is an integral component to Trex’s sourcing efforts and Albertsons Cos. is one of our original and most dedicated retail partners,” says Dave Heglas, senior director of supply chain excellence at Trex. “They aren’t content with simply participating,” he says of Albertsons. “Rather, they advance their commitment and find new ways to make a difference.”

The plastic Albertsons collects through the NexTrex program is shipped to Trex’s manufacturing facilities in Winchester, Virginia, and Fernley, Nevada. Each year, Trex says it uses approximately 200,000 tons of recycled plastic film, including more than 1.5 billion plastic bags, in the making of its decking, which is comprised of 95-percent-recycled content.
